What Would “Red” Say?

What follows is a fictional interview with Red Motley.

In the early 1930’s, Arthur H. Motley, was considered the greatest salesman in the world. Red, as he was known by all, is also famous for coining the expression, “Nothing happens until somebody sells something”.  Most people, especially those in sales, readily agree with him. What do you think he would say today about his statement and the sales world as we know it today?

We live in a rapidly changing and increasingly complex world; wouldn’t you agree? Do you think these ideas and concepts from Red Motley’s day still apply today?  Let’s imagine that we could ask Red himself.

“Red, you are known for that pearl of sales wisdom, ‘Nothing happens until somebody sells something’. Is that true today? Hasn’t the world moved on and the simple sales ideas of your time changed?”

“Well, Tom, when you first think about it, I guess it is easy to dismiss old sayings and old methods like mine. I do know this; everybody, and I mean every person, company, organizations, and yes, even governments, only thrive as a result of selling. Most sell others on the value of their ideas, products, services, and leadership. So, yes I do think my original statement is true today.”

“I had not thought about the relevancy of older advice like yours, Red, for today’s world. You have a real knack for making things simple!”

“Thank you, Tom! You see, I’ve always operated by one idea. I want to make complex things simple, but many people seem most distracted trying to make simple things complex.”

“WOW, Red, there is something in your voice and the way you say things that make me agree with you instantly!”

“There you have it, Tom, I just sold you on my idea! In fact, it makes me think to add, that I believe, selling is the wrong word for what we do. It helps to keep this in mind; communication is the skill that produces the result we call sales. How we choose the words we use and how we express our thoughts and ideas, is paramount. I encourage everyone to develop a new mindset and to think differently and act differently.”

“Red, you just confirmed the premise of the two books I have written and that of what my business partner, Alan Goldsberry and I call the ZFactor Methodology. We offer a unique sales performance roadmap based upon the proven success of top producers. I will gift a copy of each to you in exchange for your candid reviews on Amazon.”

“Ha ha, see, you just sold me something and now let’s see what happens! I’ll bet that anyone listening in on our conversation will dash out and order your books. Those who are committed to advancing their careers will certainly want to. People who are thinkers are rare but those who think and take action are even more rare. I wish you every success, and remember, keep on selling!”
