What is your emf?

Potential, what an interesting word!  It is having the capacity to become or develop into something in the future.  Let’s think about your potential and how to determine what it represents.

Here is a simple way to think about potential.  Look at an electrical outlet before anything is plugged into it.  You know that it is the access point of the entire electric grid and has the potential to power your appliances and lights.  Yet, until we make a connection, there is no flow of energy.  This latent energy is known as Electromotive Force (emf) and is static until the connection of a work load is made. What does this have to do with the human potential, you ask?

You have the capacity to produce results. You have a potential flow of energy, also, far in excess of your current position.  The problem is to identify that capacity, determine your ability to take action (emf), assess your resistance to change, and develop an action plan that you can commit to.

Do a simple Gap Analysis.  Establish a baseline for where you are and study your current path over time.  If you stay on that same path, where will you be in three years?  What about five years, ten years or twenty years?  Now determine a new point that represents where you could be.  The difference between your baseline and the determined new point is the gap, which represents your potential.  Quantify these two points and ask yourself these questions:

1. What is pushing you forward?  This is your emf (your energy).

2. What is pulling you forward?  This is the work you are committed to.

3. What is your capacity?  This is your efficiency and effectiveness.

4. What is holding you back?  This is your resistance.

5. What is your time frame?  When do you intend to achieve your new goals?

6. What metrics will you use to quantify the results you obtain?

The greatest discovery you will ever make is the potential of your own mind.  You have the potential to amaze yourself and everyone you contact. Raise your emf and go make something happen!
