The times they are a changing

Television news is providing a constant report and analysis of what’s happening in Egypt and other places where protests and demonstrations are taking place. Change is in the air or as Bob Dylan wrote, “The Times They Are A’Changin.” Most of these changes are due to political, economic, and social unrest and will result in a change of power. This issue of power is more appropriately called a desire for control. Being in power gives one control over others and control over our own destiny.

On a personal note, years ago, when I entered the life insurance profession, my primary motive was control and autonomy. I wanted control of my time, future, income, and methods. You might say I wanted the power to rule myself, but having that power comes with responsibility to make decisions. We can gain control, if we exercise our power and our responsibilities effectively. (I can tell you from personal experience, one of the major causes of stress in one’s life is a feeling of loss of control.)

Take a few minutes and think about the business we are in. The advice and help that we support our clients with, can and will assist them to attain financial security and independence. Our control over the success we achieve is through helping others. By helping more people, we experience more success in every way.

Here is the reality about control. The control we have is a direct result of the choices we make. Whatever we are experiencing today is a result of those choices made yesterday and collectively, all of our yesterdays. The underlying premise of America is the freedom of choice.

Exercise the power/freedom you have to choose carefully. Learn to make better choices, by studying past mistakes. If you are unhappy with the results you are getting today, change your choices. Consciously choose to follow a different path. And, as you position yourself to advise and help your clients, remind yourself that they want control as much as you do. You are uniquely gifted and equipped to help them choose wisely in making crucial financial decisions. Commit and dedicate your professional life to helping others answer that one essential question, “Will we be all right?”

Yes, the times they are a changing. We live in a changing and uncertain world, wouldn’t you agree? Take action now to be a positive force in making a difference in the lives of your clients. Now that is real control!
